Within the parameters of patient safety, effective communication plays a significant role in all aspects of care. However, researchers have found that a typical pathology environment is highly susceptible to error, much of it attributable to ineffective communication leading to misdiagnosis, the inappropriate and costly ordering of unnecessary and painful procedures, the prescribing of contraindicated medications, and even patient death.
